plugged in earpieces, can hear "click" has i turn speakers on and off so plugged in correctly. have troubleshot and gone through device manager but am told that device is working correctly

This has happened to me once before and was a really easy "fix" but for my life I can't remember what it was (must be my age)

hardware

well it sounds like you have a hardware problem. i dont think the drivers for ur sound are installed. Right click "my computer" and go to "properties". Then click on the "hardware" tab and then click "device manager". In that window click on the plus sign next to "Sound, video and game controllers." If the icon next to any of the audio stuff there has a question mark then that means that it hasnt been installed yet. if thats the case you can just go to install driver and it'll search online to find the drivers or if ur drivers are in a CD like a rescue disk then you can go with the option to search at a specific location like ur CD drive. Sorry i cant be specific here but i dont have any question marks next to any of my drivers and i forgot exactly what it looks like after you right click.

many thanks for input jmack but drivers are present and correct - any more ideas would be appreciated though.

Pc done this last year as well and it was a really simple fix - I just can't remember what it was. (The old brain cells aren't what they were)

First right click your speaker Icon and open Volume control
and make sure your sound is not muted. Located on your lower right.
If you don't have a speaker Icon go to the Control Panel and check your sound

Windows XP
See if your sound has been stopped in Services Under
Windows Audio.
Start - Control Panel - Open Administrative Tools - Open Component Services - Click Services (Local) and Scrowl down the list to Windows Audio to see if it says - Started. If stopped
Left click Windows Audio and click restart. -
Or
Right click Windows Audio - left click Properties - Left click Start

If the above doesn't work, go to control panel and open System Icon -
Hardware Tab - Device Manager - Click the + Plus sign for Sounds.......... -
Right click Realtek AC 97 (Or whatever Sound you have) - Left click - Update Driver.
To update you will need the CD that came with your computer.

Windows XP
You should make a Registry Backup before making changes.
Go to Start - Run, type in regedit - ok.
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound
"Beep" and "ExtendedSounds" should both be set to "yes" in order for the speakers to work.

To make a Windows Registry Backup.
Start - Run Type regedit - My Computer should be highlighted
Go to File - Left top - Left click Export - Type the word Backup - Save. When time to use it don't go to were it's saved,
go back to regedit.
Start - Run - regedit - OK -
File - Import - Right click Backup - Left click Merge.
Once you have save your backup I wouldn't move it.
Anyway that's the way I get it to work for me.

try this
Jul 17, 2007 2:41PM PDT

if it was an easy solution give this a try, control panel - sounds and audio devices - Audio tab -check whats showing in default device -- change if necessary - if something other that what you want is showing pick what you want and uncheck 'use only default devices' at bottom of box.

Still no joy - however possibly ***** of light

When removing speakers to prepare pc for visit to docs, got some feedback and feeble attempt at sound ran soundtest whilst inserting and removing jack (something very Freudian about that) and got something vaguely resembling sound - however sound card is showing up fine on device manager - anymore ideas.

My speakers worked fine when tested on another pc

Many thanks

Sid

plugged in how
Jul 17, 2007 6:23PM PDT

Hi - the speakers will often make a clicking sound if something else is activated on your comp. It does not mean that they are "plugged in correctly". So how about trying to insert the plugs in some other way, in another socket, etc? Sometimes the solution is as simple as that. Good luck - Amos
