No Sound

Mar 20, 2004 9:22AM PST

I have a compaq, running xp pro. I have system sounds, but no sound from the speakers. I tested the speakers on another pc and they work. I've checked the volume control......I get a message that says there are no active mixers.....I don't have software for the computer.

What should I do next?

Thank you,
the old one

Access the website and look for the audio drivers for your machine and or sound card.

Thanks,
The computer is not connected to the internet. (I can install my ISP, if needed.) How do I find out the name of the driver that I need to install? When I go to device manager there are several items listed under sounds. Should I find and install everything?

If you are the original owner of the machine and have not made any changes regarding the sound then go to Compaqs website and look up your make and model to see which software is available. Or give us the make and model.

You must first determine the source. Do you have an add-on pci sound card? Do you have integrated sound (built into the mainboard)?

If you have the manual that came with the machine, you should find this info. there. If you don't have your manual, you will have to look inside the case,
or go to the Compaq website and look for the specs. for your computer.
When you determine this and what brand, model #, etc., the forum can suggest ways to solve the problem.

It may not be at all complicated, but you must post more info.

Try this:
Start/Control Panel/System/hardware tab/device manager.
Look for audio or sound device. Then double click the device, check to see if the device is working properly. Post what your find.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, I found all of that and went to compaqs website. I downloaded the one that was there, but it didn't work.

I decided to call a friend who's a pc repairman.
