I recommend Pinnacle 9 plus as it runs the camera for you. The video is crisp and clear as it is on the tape. the MPEG captured on memmory stick will not be as good, but the software helps correct sound and video. Great software, top of the line so far.

You need FIREWARE cable

You are on the wrong way - SONY software that comes with camera will help you to transfer still pictures from your camera ONLY. Furthermore, the USB cable, which you've used will not make a good job with video capturing. You have to buy a fireware cable (i-Link or IEEE 1394 called also) and to connect your camera through fireware port on your PC (if you don't have it buy a fireware PCI card).
Finally, forget about SONY "Picture Package" software for video capturing and go for something else (WinDV is a free capturing software, or ROXIO, or PINACLE Studio... Last two can burn DVD's, WinDV captures only).
