I am assembling a system using a SOYO ST-KT600 Dragon Plus v2.0 mobo.
Using Cable select on the HDD [master on Primary IDE cable] and Lite-On CD-ROM/DVD reader combo as Master on secondary cable.
If, in the BIOS, I set to AUTO detect the secondary master, it does not get detected and the system continues to boot to A [nothing on hard drive yet, so using win 98 boot floppy]. Just for interest if I boot with CD support I can do a DIR of the drive and it works.
If, instead, I set the secondary master to CD I get the Message "not an ATAPI device" and hit F1 to proceed.
Soyo said to put the Lite-On on the Primary cable as the slave. I didn't bother doing that because Toni Hackler said to make it the slave on the secondary, and it worked like a champ. I have no idea how that country hick knows so much. LOL [or is it country chick? LOL].
I replied to Soyo that with most cases the hard drive is well below the Burner and using cable select it is really impossible to have the HDD connected to the end connector and somehow get the middle connector to the burner.
Could jumper the drive as a Master and plug it in the middle and jumper the burner as a slave and connect to the end connector [actually it still will not reach, LOL]. Using WD drives make this a PITA because it uses no jumper for master alone and a jumper for master with slave. Thus if one decides to change configurations one has to change the jumper. Cable Select is such a nice solution.
Just seems that the cable people, mobo people, case people and BIOS people ought to take a look at the sassembly of a system.
At the present time I intend to run with the combo on the middle connector as cable select. This leaves the master connector on the secondary cable unterminated which theoretically can lead to reflections and data loss problesms. Twould be nice if one could buy a $2.00 terminator connector. LOL
I may buy a cheapie CD-ROM to put on the master but then will have to get off my butt and move the burner down a spot.
So, if anyone reading this is in charge of computer specification creation please do something to correct this silly situation.
The ridiculos thing is that the computer that I am taking off line uses the RAID ports as IDE and I have two HDD's, a CD-ROM and a burner [not a combo] all as Masters using single ended round cables. [only going to use the second HDD and modem from this one in the new one]
