No "Printer Ink Low" message. Don't know when I'm out.

I have a Cannon iP3000 printer and I had always gotten a display when I printed showing if an ink cartridge was running out and then I could replace it. I don't get the display anymore and the colors are fading but I don't know which printer cartridge is bad. I don't want to have to replace all 3 cartridges when this happens, I would rather replace only the bad one. I've tried all the maintenance things and nothing helps. Is the low cartridge warning part of the Cannon system or my XP windows programming? I was really happy with the printer until this and getting help from Cannon is a waste of time. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Reinstall the drivers? Look for updated drivers?
