Question

No Post, no beep, no boot. Mobo, Cpu, and Psu. What's wrong?

Sep 13, 2015 12:29AM PDT

System Specs:
-Coolmaster HAF High airflow Full Tower
-Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge 6 Core 3.2ghz
-G.SKILL Ripjaw Z Series 4x4gb 240 pin DDR3 2133
-G.SKILL Ripjaw X Series 2x8gb 240 pin DDR3 2133
-Intel BOXDX79TO LGA 2011
-Seasonic SS-750KM3 750W Power Supply
- ASUS GeForce GTX 680 2gb
- Intel 330 Series Maple Crest 180gb SSD
-Linksys Wireless-N300 Dual Band Wireless card

My wireless has been giving me trouble. I updated all the drivers and still had some sort of issue. I take it out of the case and give it a quick clean and start getting 3 long beeps with no boot which I interpreted as hardware failure or possibly memory failure. Cleaned out all the ram and no beep and boot. Put back in one ram and boots fine with the wireless not showing problems yet. I shut down and re-install the rest of the ram and go back to no boot no beep.

The no boot no beep is highly frustrating as I don’t know what it could be. So I go for a basic setup with just Ram, Cpu, Psu, and Mobo. No boot, no beep. Took out the ram and tried to turn it on, no beep no boot. Haven’t tried breadboarding yet as I don’t have too much space living in San Francisco but definitely an option if all else fails. I have a hunch that the cpu, psu, or mobo are probably defective and need to get a replacement. I don’t have any spare parts as well to test but I can take my PC into a shop and see if I can pick up a new piece and see if it works before I buy it.

Any help is appreciated =)

RAM problem

G.SKILL Ripjaw Z Series 4x4gb 240 pin DDR3 2133
-G.SKILL Ripjaw X Series 2x8gb 240 pin DDR3 2133

It would seem the mix of RAM may be your problem. You have 6 slots for RAM? Why isn't all the RAM matched sets?

JD noted the RAM. Here's why they don't mix.

Answer
You can go for less on the basic setup.

Boards I've run into beep in protest without RAM. So that gets you down to CPU, motherboard and PSU (and of course speaker.)

The question of which one is bad is answered by replacing the items one by one. It could be a failed CMOS battery so swap that first. After that I use this old advice. Replace the cheapest part first.

Replacing the parts later today

I think that is my only option right now. I'm going to take it into a store later today see if they can swap pieces out until we figure out what is the problem and then replace it.

Thanks and I'll keep you posted Happy
