No Network on iMac

by ziptie / December 31, 2010 4:00 AM PST

I just bought an intel iMac with Tiger. I was told it is about 4 years old. I'm trying to network it to my G4 iBook, also with Tiger. On the iMac,when I try to open Network in system preference, I just get a blank window. I have tried to reinstall the os with the disk that originally came with it, and after a while, and a lot of noise, it just ejects the disk.

Here are the specs to the iMac

is a slight glitch with the Network Pane.

Fortunately you do not need the Network pane to connect to another computer.

On the Finder menu bar you will see a GO option. Click on it and slide down to Network. This "should" bring up a network window, not the one that is missing, in which you should see the machines on your network, the ones that have file sharing turned on.

Go from there

Thanks mrmacfixit, that worked great. Do you have any advice on how to access my iTunes from my iMac to my iBook? I don't want to load them all on the iBook, just listen to iTunes over wifi in my shop. If not, can you recomend a different app?

on the iMac, go to the Sharing section and check the "Share my library on the local network" box.
You might as well check the "Look for shared libraries" while you are there.

On the iBook, iTunes Preferences, go to the same place and check "Look for shared libraries"

The iMac library will appear in the left hand side bar of the iBook and the entire iMac library will be available to the iBook

How dat?

In reply to: In iTunes Preferences,

That was easy enough. I really appreciate your fast replies to my trivial questions. On other forums, I was either insulted or ignored.
