No longer used network name won't go away

Jul 7, 2009 4:44PM PDT

I was having a problem with my Airport Extreme Base Station so I reset it and set up a new network. I also have an Airport Express. My wireless network is working fine now except for one annoying thing. The old network name that doesn't exist anymore always shows up under the Airport bars and sometimes it's the first network my airport looks for so I have to manually change it. How do I get rid of it?

Try this

Go to System Preferences > Network.
Select Airport from the left hand pane
Click Advanced in the right hand pane
Click the Airport tab.
Select the Network Name that you want to get rid of and click the "minus" button.

Your airport looks for your old one first because it is at the top of the list.

The above works with 10.5 for sure. Should work for all OS X but with slight variations

More on getting rid of old network
Jul 8, 2009 3:35AM PDT

Thank you. I had forgotten how to get my current network at the top of the list. I had brought my base station to the genius bar and it checked out perfectly and my old network name didn't show up at all. He said that if it's showing up at home (which it is), it's probably stored in my Airport Express and he told me I should be able to remove it or combine it with my new one by going into utilities and I forget the next selection. I've tried looking for my Airport Express on my MacBook and can't see it anywhere. Any thoughts on what I should be doing?

If you reset the Express, reconfigure it to join a wireless network, all should be fine.
(this is if you are using the express to extend your wireless network and not when your express is connected to your existing wired network)
