where does a router figure into all this?
Mar 30, 2017 11:31PM PDT

Sorry i did not mention it the router is in the back office where a LAN cable runs into a 20 port switch and from that switch another LAN cable runs into the switch were my first computer is connected and from this switch a LAN cable goes again into another switch were the 4 are involved now. So in all there is 3 switches involved.

3 switches?

Have your IT check out if the router supports that many PCs. You may have to upgrade that router to a business class router.

I take it that the IT already checked for wiring errors.

PS. Do not daisy chain switches if possible.

Switch
Mar 31, 2017 11:01AM PDT

Take the new switch and set it next to the switch that the first computer plugs into.

Connect the new switch to the second switch with a short piece of lan cable.

Connect the first pc to the new switch.

Does the first pc still work?

Answer
Generally, We Do It This Way

Modem/router, then cabled to a switch, then cabled to ALL other computers on the network. As an example in our fairly large government office, we had a 96 port ethernet switch (I think) which was connected to the network/internet on one side and about 80 ethernet cables to computers on the other side. Some of the cable runs were about 75 feet. I also set up a fairly small office which had a Verizon internet connection. Much like a home network, Verizon hooked directly to their modem/router inside the room, and from there, a couple computers connected directly to the router with ethernet cables. Then to make the next stretch, we added another cable from the same router/modem to a 16 port switch. From the switch was connected another 6 or 7 computers by ethernet cables which reached about 20 feet each.

The problem with the two switches and a router is that they may all be trying to issue IP address which causes a problem.

Hope this helps.
