General discussion

No internet connectivity--sometimes

Sep 21, 2009 1:21AM PDT

When I use my computer from my home (base) phone, I can no longer connect with aol. Message is that computer cannot get a dial tone. I've changed all the cables, the phone works fine. Aol suggests the problem may be with the computer itself and suggests I call Dell. But when I connect the computer through my aol account (same account)at another location, I have no problem connecting--which suggests it is not the computer. Any thoughts about what this could be and how to resolve it would be greatly appreciated.

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop, using XP, Service Pack 3 and McAfee security system.

Many thanks.

Unplug all other phones, fax machines, etc. Try other outlets.

Tried that. So unable to get a dial tone --although can get one for the phone, fax and when I try from another location 120 miles away.

Thanks for your thoughts.

but the phone and fax work fine. Tried all new cables, diffrent electric plugs, etc. Doesn't seem to be the computer or modem, since it works frine from another location. Verizon and aol say evrything is fine. Haven't been able to get to e-mail or the web for more than a week at my home location (Manhattan).

Computer is a Dell Inspiron 4100, XP with service pack 3.

Many thanks.

One of the mysteries of modems.

What I learned years ago is to change the modem even if it works elsewhere. This issue can wipe many owners out in repair costs.
