No interest in suggesting Vista OS

Mar 28, 2007 9:19AM PDT

As a PC technician it is a crucial time for me and I would like any input because my customers and friends count on me. As for Vista(I like to call OSXP)which the geeks will get, but for the rest : The pre released version I worked with seemed to merely be a combo of XP and Mac OSX. In true Microsoft form they innovated pre exsisting products. OK what Im really trying to understand is I used to advise people to get whatever New PC they wanted and I would configure it using info from there old HD etc. However now the NEW retail model's come with some form of VISTA and I wouldn't go that route yet, as it would be easier to Format and install XP. Is it that simple? Or are there soft/hardware conflicts either purposefully or nature of technology. Of course there is the Apple route which is exciting for some, but intimidating too many others?

Vista?
Mar 30, 2007 1:55PM PDT

I have Vista at work and have problems with it since I got the new computer. I always try out the newest versions before customer really get the feel of the new OS's mainly because I like to know what to expect from it. I have to say that Vista is not that great. I would not recommend it at all until they release SP1. I have also reformatted my computer and installed XP Pro, and have had no problems what so ever out of the machine. Hope this helps you out Happy

hi, As a PC technician, have you not even tried for yourself to put xp on to a vista pc? just seems odd to come to a public forum to ask that.

Rumor has it that Vista machines will not take well to XP.
It could posibly cause irreversable problems?
That is probably why he wanted to know.

Any machine that will run Vista will run XP. However, I don't see why anyone would want to. I have used Vista since May 2006 on a modified XP machine and love it.
I am now running Vista Ultimate x64 with no problems.
There are some programs that are incompatible, but that won't be for long! Meanwhile, I have been able to find (mostly freeware or open source) programs that work.
When the others get off their collective butts and become compatible I will use them.
Microsoft has come out with a very secure and eye pleasing OS and the rest of the software world better get compatible or we might begin to like our substitutes and not go back to them!

Proceed with caution.

I'm aware of some issues that occur after Vista upgrades when people decide they want to go back to XP for compatibility reasons. If somebody's burrowed in with XP they might be best off waiting or doing a clean install of Vista on a separate partition.

I have no complaints with the Vista OS itself as installed on a new computer, but there is a learning curve and we are on the steep part of the compatibility curve.
