Question

No Input to Monitor

Mar 18, 2017 6:01AM PDT

I have a Gateway Dx4860-Ur28 Desktop. The machine came with Windows 8 preinstalled. I did the free upgrade to Win 10. The HDD was getting full so I decided to upgrade the HDD. While attempting to change my 1TB HDD to a 3TB HDD, my monitor said it would restart. The monitor now see's no input. My monitor works with other computers. I bought a video card to see if that would work, it didn't. I cleaned & reseated the RAM, that didn't work. I removed the CMOS battery, waited a few hours & put in a new battery, still no input to the monitor. I replaced the power supply with a better one, no success. I unpluged the optical drive. I tried a different monitor that I know that works to no avail. The only thing that I could think thats left is the motherboard or the i5 processor. I can not find a motherboard anywhere online for this machine & I can't afford a new processor. What motherboard options do I have? or is there something else that I can try? I also attempted using VGA rather than the HDMI, still nothing.
With the power off, I put the old drive in an external enclosure, the new 3TB drive in my computer & had it boot from the old drive.
When power is turned on, the power supply fan, cpu fan, & case fan all work. I do not see any lights on the MB but perhaps there are not supposed to be any. The light on the case and the power button light works.
I ordered 8GB of new ram, if that doesn't work then what motherboard could I use to replace the one that is in there? and where could I find one? I am having difficulty searching to find a motherboard for the Gateway DX4860-UR28. What other Motherboards could I use with my existing hardware?

Unplug both hdd's.
Remove the video card and plug the monitor into the mobo.
Power up.
Do you see the bios screen?

tell us about the monitor

Is it a newer TV actually? I use a Vizio TV for a monitor currently and I have to switch from TV signal to the HDMI port assigned for my computer to use. It has 3-4 HDMI ports and if I choose the wrong one, I get "no signal detected". If you have such a "monitor-TV" then perhaps you've changed it to a wrong port for both TV and computer.

Tried two different monitors. One monitor is HDMI, the other is VGA. Both monitors work with other computers but not this one.

USB

You can't boot windows from a USB drive. Your old drive will only work to boot the computer if attached to a PATA or SATA port. That's built into windows.

I went like this " motherboard for the Gateway DX4860-UR28 "
and
This is what google showed me  , in there I found that your motherboard is an Asus ipisb-vr rev 1.01 .
I did another search Here ,and there is the motherboard

I looked Here  and other places and it is available.

Do your own search to be sure that is the motherboard

I've seen this and it does not have the same amount of ports. On my computer, it has 2 extra usb 3.0 ports on the rear plate. Thank you anyway for looking. Hopefully when I receive the new ram that I ordered, that will do the trick.

Mobo

Gateway could have fitted that machine with a variety of mobo's.

Shop for a mobo based on the numbers printed on the mobo you have.

Mobo
Mar 21, 2017 7:23PM PDT

Just received my new RAM today and installed it. I guess that may be considered a waste of money except that I could add it to the RAM that I have - but still no signal. I found the motherboard on ebay. (GATEWAY DX4860-UR28 MOTHERBOARD MB.SG50P.007). $57.00. The RAM was $55.00 at Crucial. I ordered the Mobo today. Just about everything in this computer is new except the case and cpu. For the price of a new cpu, I could buy another computer. I'm hoping the motherboard that I ordered works!

We all do it lol !

I did the same thing with an old Dell 530s ,
It seems like we just have to get it out of our systems Silly
But, I have purchased from ebay before and have had nothing but good luck...
Sooo, Good Luck !

P.S. Hmm, wondering if this version of Windows is OEM ?
But that's another conversation Devil

Installed Motherboard. Power will not stay on now. Fans start to spin, computer shuts off then tries to start again & again but will not stay on. Changed power cord, that's not the problem. Tried the old ram, then tried the new ram, no difference. Fans will only spin for a second or two.

Possibly Bad Mobo
Mar 25, 2017 9:57AM PDT

Put in old Mobo. Fans & computer stay on but no signal to monitor. Old HDD has Win 10, was a free upgrade from Win. 8. It looks like maybe the supposedly new Mobo I got from ebay is worse than the original. New ram and old ram tried, still no input to monitor.

" The Money Pit " ?
The Mods and others warned ME that I was jumping into that pit while sinking money into that old Dell 530s , but once into it ehhh ! Whatchagonnado !
(Being from Chicago I get to say that lol }
It was a good experience though and I turned it into my Linux machine that sang a pretty mean tune !

I guessing the same thing you are BUT the back of my mind is telling me to check that PSU .......

Motherboard Numbers
Apr 8, 2017 4:56AM PDT

Searching the mobo for numbers was a daunting task due to how small the numbers are and whether you have a zero or the letter O. Looking at the motherboard that I ordered, (Acer M3970 Intel Desktop Motherboard S1155 MB.SG50P.007) said that it was for the Gateway DX4860-UR28. The 22 letters and numbers after the S/N on the mobo had no dots but the first 10 matched the MBSG50P007 so I looked on my original mobo and saw that the first 10 numbers were different, (MBSHA0P002). I then ordered the correct mobo and now the computer works fine. I also now have extra ram and a video card if I want to upgrade the machine, an expensive troubleshooting method. Using the Crucial scanner, instead of saying that it is a Gateway DX4860-UR28, it now says it is an Acer Aspire M3970.
