No icons on desktop!

This has been a problem for a long time now on my office computer (Dell), but I have worked around it.
When I start up my computer running XP home add. everthing goes well the icons come up then they go away nothing but the background.
There are some popups that says can not find file 0000000000000 and so on(I'm not at my computer now).If I don't close the last one the icons stays on the desktop and computer works okay.I just move it to the bottom.
I did a search and I find the files. I can get the names and where they are monday when I'm back at work.But maybe someone has seen this before.
