No icons in the All Programs menu

The discussion on icons for Favorites reminded me of a long-standing annoyance on one of my machines. This is XP Pro, latest updates. In the Start | All Programs menu, some application icons appear correctly (Acrobat Reader, Windows Messenger, Paint.NET, for example), but most have a generic icon, including, for example, Microsoft Office, Quicken, Real, Winzip, etc.

It would really be wonderful if anyone had a suggestion for this - it would make it a whole lot easier to scan that menu.
