No Fireworks for July 4th this year.

Jul 1, 2010 10:23PM PDT

How about where you live? I suspect many communities in California, Nevada, and Florida can't afford fireworks for the Fourth. It's not just those hard hit states either, but medium to smaller communities across America. Is this being responsible, or just being stingy?

Expect fewer booms this July Fourth because of financial busts in some cities and towns. As many folks pack up picnics and head to see the fireworks this holiday weekend, the skies over a couple-dozen cash-strapped communities will be missing the spectacular crackle of color that Americans associate with the nation's birthday. Blame the economy.

But in rich Orange County California I have not heard of cutbacks. We have fireworks at disneyland plus most of the cities in the area that reap 6 figure incomes from the average citizen.

(NT) Expect larger crowds this year then

South Dakota fireworks

In my home state of South Dakota, the only times we will not have firework is if there is a Fire-ban or it is raining. I have not hear of any firework displays being cancelled because of finical reasons.

Many communities do not have money to burn this year. They would normally have plenty to burn with the excess taxes they collect to support their budgets. Very telling...

You miss the point

If the government has money to burn after collecting taxes then they are collecting more than they need!

Well....

I believe much of the fireworks here are paid for by private donations. The Fire Dept runs fundraisers. However, most folks consider July 4th fireworks to be a vital part of the town's
services, so wouldn't consider that portion of taxes excessive.

Private donations are different

I'm simply pointing out that any tax revenue available to burn are excess taxes collected.

OR...you missed the point?

The Prof. says Americans don't pay a lot of taxes.

They don't pay a lot of taxes but they still pay too much?

This year people are remarking/complaining that there are NO fireworks...

No complaints last last year...when THERE WERE fireworks? Perhaps there were complaints...I didn't see any.....

NO fireworks on a National Day? If a person didn't want that they would be unpatriotic.

(NT) Nope. I made a point. You missed it.

All depends on what you

(you being that community majority) want the community to furnish.

If enough hue and cry had been heard in the past about "wasting money" on fireworks, they probably wouldn't do it.

No one agrees with everything their taxes are spent on. Everyone agrees tax money is wasted, but seldom agree on specifics to make it better. Or at least, don't agree to the service cuts that come about when you cut taxes.

Oh I'll agree, and probably everyone else, that corruption and stupidity waste taxes too. But since it seems no matter who is elected, there is always some avenue that money gets lost. I guess the people who can do the job right won't take it.

However, I know in NC after a terrific accident with fireworks that killed four people there have been new requirements passed for anyone running a fireworks show. As I understand it, many of the people in communitites that had been allowed before (often a fire chief by one report) do not qualify now. Because of this many smaller displays cancelled for lack of an authorize person to run them.

For some towns this is probably a good escape clause this year rather than admitting they don't have the money.

The poor economy is of course cutting town budgets. Falling property values, less sales tax as people by less, less business taxes as business fold,.....all these and more are hurting town, county, and state tax revenues.

While agreed that government, small and large, can be much more efficient, I already hearing (and expect to hear more) complaints from people about certain things not being done. The road they use on the way to work has had it's re-pavement postponed another year. The state isn't maintaining the road shoulders, grass is too high. The water extension project is delayed even though a bond passed (what income is to be had is probably a larger percentage servicing the bond that was expected). Etc, Etc, Etc.

Waste is anything that doesn't help me directly seems to be the main theme.
