No Disc Inserted Message

May 19, 2004 11:16AM PDT

Win98SE.
This problem popped up suddenly when I attempted to play a game requiring a disc in the CD-ROM. I inserted the proper disc in the usual manner and instead of the game starting a get a message saying "no disc inserted". I removed the disc and tried again to no avail. I removed the disc again and restarted my PC and this did not help. I tried another disc and that did not work either.
Any suggestions?

D.C.,

Make sure the CD disk is clean, just to be sure.

Next, since it's a Win98 machine, and probably a few years old, it could be that the drive is going bad, but you might want to check to make sure that the "Auto Insert Notification" box is checked in "Device Manager" for your CD-Rom. (RIGHT click on "My Computer", choose "Properties", select "Device Manager", click on the + sign next to "CD Rom Drives", then click once on your specific CD-Rom device that is displayed, then click on "Properties". I think you then click on the "Settings" tab and make sure there is a CHECK mark in the "Auto Insert Notificaton" box.

Replacement of the CD-Rom is pretty easy and fairly cheap.

Hope this helps.

Grif, I followed your instructions to a tee and they worked. I have no idea how the settings got changed but they are now OK.
Thanks a million, Grif.
