No device icon for Sansa e250R

I was charging my Sandisk Sansa e250R and got a message that there is new firmware to update the player, but there isn't enough space so I should free some up and reconnect the player. I tried to delete songs out of my playlist and from My Library in the Best Buy Digital Music Store software, but the songs are still on the player. I realized I'm not seeing the device icon under Sources in the software which I need to see to delete the songs from there. I don't know if there is a problem with that because I don't have the firmware update, but I can't get it until I delete off my songs from the player. Does anyone know how to do this without deleting the songs from my computer harddrive and without seeing the device icon? I am totally confused.
