No Connection to Internet

Jul 23, 2007 8:49PM PDT

I recently encountered a problem and my computer could not connect to internet suddenly. I had tried to turn off firewall and AV softwares but it didn't help. I finally managed to get on line after deleting the line of Localhost (i.e. 127.0.0.1 localhost) in the Host file. There were nothing wrong with my firewall and AV softwares (Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0), as they worked O.K. AV, SpybotSD and Ad-aware 2007 scans did not indicate my computer had been stoned or hacked or whatever it had happened to my computer. I think to myself it is weir to delete the line of localhost before I can get on line. Is there anyone in this forum who can give me some advice on my problem. Many thanks in advance.

I'm guessing it's Windows (no version?) because of the tools noted. There is also no word of what the hardware connection is. (Cable, dsl, router.)

As such I can only offer one little tool I'd try given so little to work with. Go get WINSOCKFIX and run that to push the settings back to stock.

No Connection to Internet

Dear Bob,

Thank you for your advice. I am using Window XP and a cable modem connected with a router then with Asoka powerline ethernet adapters (PL9640-ETH) to form my home network. I shall try your suggested method this weekend and let you know the result later.

Bob,

I tried Winsockfix on my computer this Sunday but it could not fix the problem. I still needed to delete the line of localhost before I could go on line. Any further suggestion?

What was in the localhost line?

Does it autoregenerate? If so I think you have some malware on the machine.

See our security forum top posts for free tools to identify and remove that.

What was in the localhost line

Bob,

The local host line contains "127,0,0,1 localhost" and I have to delete this line before I can get connection to internet. I have run Ad-aware 2007 and SpybotSD but there wasn't any unusual findings. Maybe I should check out other forum as you suggested.
