No CD_R/RW - Philips cdd4801 CD-R/rw

Dec 7, 2003 12:10AM PST

I am a newbie and I have a problem with my CDR/RW...It dont want to work. I start up the computer and nothing happens with it. Ive tried uninstalling it and reinstalling to no avail. I click and try to open the E drive and it tells me theres an error with I/O device(please tell me what that means!!) Ive checked device manager and it tells me the CD_R/RW is working properly. If I replace the CD-R/RW with a new on would it solve the problem?? Also my screen freezes up every minute for about ten seconds does that have anything to do with it? Answers will be appreciated!!

1) Your drive may be dead or dying, boot to a Win98 bootdisk with a CD in the CDRW drive and see if you can access the files.
2) Scan your computer with Spybot/Adaware/Housecall, and remove any pests that may be lurking about.

"Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution."

1. Roxio software = known bug on some OS's. Your post is too light on the details, but here's some reading on this issue -> http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/drive_recovery.jhtml This issue extends to other versions of Roxio.

2. The freezing and pausing makes me think you have either a hardware issue or some common PESTS. Parasites are not Virus, Trojan or such and many think that an Antivirus is all they need. Your choice to scan for and eject said PARASITES, but my choice is zero-tolerance to what I find with the scanners I note at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0

3. The "Tip" above is presented each time you make a posting. If items 1 or 2 don't work for you, then consider filling in the blanks for the forum.

4. At this time, I would not change the CDRW drive. I would check out the Roxic issue, eject all parasites, use a CD Lens Cleaner, and update the FIRMWARE on the CDRW drive and then consider replacing the drive. I might not replace such with another CDRW drive since DVD recorders of all format capability have dived below 99USD. (I picked one up for 79.)

Sorry about that guys...had no room !!! hopefully this will help: Compaq system model 5101RSH
900 mhz AMD Duron Processor with192 Kb on-chip

cache memory
128 MB SyncDRAM total system memory
Intergrated Savage4 AGP4X 3D Graphics
Philips cdd4801 CD-R/rw (if theres anything else i missed please tell me...im a computer dummy!) Ive tried Spy bot and got rid of those annoying lil programs that i never new were there! but it didnt help the CDR/RW situation. I went the roxio website and downloaded the patch for updating the engine but that doesnt work. The second fix im not sure will help but try if you think it might.House call found nothing strange. One thing I find weird is that the computer freezes only when i have the Cd-R/RW enabled. I now have it disabled and its fine. but enabling the cd-r/rw doesnt do anything for me. It doesnt eject but the light stays on all the time. Let me know if theres anything else you need to know.

No eject = BAD NEWS.
Dec 7, 2003 5:09AM PST

I would as the last hurrah do this.

1. Power down.
2. Use the MANUAL EJECT method to open the drive door and if there is a stuck CD, fish it out.
3. Unplug the WIDE CABLE off the back of the drive.
4. Power up and see if the eject button works. IF the eject button fails to open and close the drive door, NO FURTHER tests are needed. The drive is officially busted.

--------------------------------

You still didn't note the CDRW software. A common issue with ROXIO was vanishing drives and eject buttons not working. Omission of these details make for more back and forth as the details or dug out.

The vanishing drive issue was noted in my prior response.
The locked eject issue is either the dead drive issue or you didn't update the Roxio software from www.roxio.com Don't feel bad since Roxio doesn't advertise that the software is a little buggy as delivered.
