The story sounds like what could happen.

Try this small reset.

Remove all power from the laptop, remove the battery, press and hold the power button for 60 seconds, release, slip in battery, apply power, test.

It could be just bad luck the HDD contents went away on the move. Hope you have backups and the maker's restore media.

Slip in the new drive and use the maker's restore media. DO NOT INSTALL the old drive yet. After the machine is working, add the OLD HDD and see if it's contents show up. If they do, done. If they do not, use RECUVA (free, how to use is on the web) to see if you can copy out your files to backups (remember, a PC without backups is like acrobatics without a net.)

The maker's restore media is the factory recovery system. It can be a set of DVDs, USB stick or other. These are not optional since someday you will lose the HDD and need to restore the machine to factory condition.

If you elected not to make a system backup, or this media, you order these now.
