No boot after BIOS flash....just an FYI

Nov 23, 2009 6:34AM PST

I've a yet to be activated new PC on which I installed my pre-ordered upgrade disk. The system is built around and ASUS P7P55D series board, has 4 megs of Corsair XMS RAM, a WD Raptor drive and Gigabyte ATI 4850 graphics card. I've installed as both 32 and 64 bit making complete drive images as I progress. I want to hold off activation until I determine which install is preferred. I've had a few unexplained lockups that I can't back out of...something my XP Pro rig almost never does. Although I should know better, I found 2 newer BIOS updates and flashed with the newest. Both said they corrected unspecified instability problems. After doing so, Win 7 64 bit would not boot and could not auto-repair. Restoring the last 32 bit image worked fine but any 64 bit image was dead in the water. To get it to work, I had to return to the previous BIOS and restore the last 64 bit image again. I suppose another clean installation might have worked as well. I suspect a hardware change happened that Win 7 couldn't deal with. Just another warning about BIOS flashes. Do so at your own risk and make that BIOS backup first. Whew! Happy
