Resolved Question

No audio input device installed

Jan 6, 2018 12:32PM PST

I updated windows yesterdays and after the update, my sound stopped working altogether. I get the message "no audio device installed". I ran the troubleshooter and it fixed nothing.

I then tried the following
1. updating the sound driver (i have one: NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM))
2. Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver
3. Trying a different driver (all the Realtek drivers I tried had error 10)
4.Checking if windows audio service was running and set to auto (it was) and restarting it
5. sfc /scannow on cmd
6. Scanning for viruses or malware
7. Resetting the computer to a previous date, before I updated Windows
8. Checked my BIOS settings to see if onboard audio is enabled (it was)

What I noticed

- None of the steps I tried were successful
-When I go on my sound settings, it says that there are no playback devices installed
-It even says this if I plug in things like headphones

My laptop details
Although I don't think this will help,
Intel i7-7500M (notebook processor)
Nvidia Geforce 940MX
16G ram
All my drivers are fully updated
Dell inspirion 7560
My laptop is quite new and I'm sure there are no defects in the hardware

Any help would be greatly appreciated

With me, program msinfo32 notes the manufacturer and the model number on the opening page. To know even more about your PC, run Belarc Advisor or Everest or make a speccy. All are free to download and run and easy to find with Google.
