no audio device or volume on dell e1505 laptop

i have a dell inspiron e1505 laptop. i turned it on the other day to watch a movie and my volume button was not working. i clicked volume up and down and the mute button, and nothing worked. i clicked the control panel and under the sound and audio device it showed nothing being played. it says no audio device. i cannot manually move up or down the volume. it just has nothing there. i am computer illiterate and could use some help.

Re: no audio

If it used to work, I'd do a system restore back to when it still worked. Still, it's possible it's a hardware issue.

no audio or volume control

i did the system restore a few times and it still doesn't work. the volume meter doesnt show the mute logo when i press mute and when i go volume + or - it doesn't show in the meter still. i'm not sure what to do. the sound audio devices under control panel still is all greyed out and it still says "no audio device."

Re: no audio

Boot from a Linux Live CD (Ubuntu) for example, and see if the sound works then. If not, it's a hardware failure.
