No Audio but static Acer Aspire x1800

Hey guys Got something really confusing me here. I have an acer aspire x1800, it has an on board realtek sound device.

I hear only static through my headphones and speakers, even when the sound is mute. It used to detect anything Id plugged into the jacks but now detects nothing.

Now, last night I was trying to DIY a cable to run from my guitar amp into the mic port of my computer, could I have wrecked the sound device by doing this? Thanks guys
