Nividia Geforce 7800GS

Sep 9, 2006 4:45AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a new AGP video card for my 1st Gen Dell XPS. I currently have an Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 and I was planning on upgrading to the 7800GS. Is anyone sure this will or won't be compatible? Also, if anyone has any other suggestions, I will consider them.

Too expensive for dead end tech

7800GS is compatible with an AGP 8X slot. You will need to ugrade to a beefier PSU if you install one of those cards.

Personally, I'd purchase/build a new computer with a ''PCI Express X16'' slot before dumping $250-300 into an AGP card and $50-100 into a good PSU.

System specs?

What are the complete system specs? Teh 7800GS is the most powerful AGP card available, but if your complete system (this includes power supply) is not up to par, it will be bottlenecked, or (in case of inadequate power supply), might not even work.

I'm with linkit on this one; buy a new computer rather than spend $400 upgrading an old system. If you don't need a whole new system, than you could upgrade to a lower-end (and cheaper) AGP card for $100-150.

Specs

Well this actually has a 460 W power supply, so that shouldn't be an issue. I'm getting this card for Christmas, so a new computer is definitely not an option. I have a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz with HT, 512 MB of RAM (I'm buying a 2 GB pack soon), and an Intel 875P chip set. If you need to know anything else, all the specs are here. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dimxps/en/sm/specs.htm#1105791

I just figured I would get a high end graphics card that will last until I get another computer, which won't be for about 2.5 years.

In that case...

...get this BFG Tech GF6800GS for $140 after a $30 mail-in-rebate. Or wait for the Leadtek WinFast A7600GT to come back in stock. The 7600GT is slightly better performance, but it's more expensive, and it's out of stock right now. I'd go for the 6800GS.
