Question

Nissan 1997

My Nissan pick up truck has started when you turn the lights on or push on the brake it looses power and stalls out. But it runs fine if you don’t turn the lights on and have brake light unplugged.

In reply to: How old is that battery?

The battery is new and the alternator is new. We changed the combination switch and that wasn’t it. We have checked grounds and they are good. We are just at a loss here.

In reply to: Testing

As you turned on the lights? Did it plummet? If so, depending on where you measure....

If the battery falls off, bad battery. New does not mean good!
If at some other point and the battery stayed at 12.2 or up, connection problems from there to where you measured.

My husband got a new fresh battery. It reads 12.4 when turning in the ac it goes to 14.1. When you turn the lights on for the little time it will run it stayed at 14.1. The alternator is charging.
You can even put your foot on the brake without the lights on and it will stall out. The blinkers don’t work when running with the lights on. Anything lights will stall it out within a minute if that long. The instrument lights don’t act right either they are very dim when you turn them on.

Then it's something lossy from there to the other electrical systems. I can't guess what you can see but how is the fuse and other electrics for "LOOKS"? Any rust?

Did you try the old unplug, replug in what you can routine?

Check the cable connections

In reply to: Battery

You can have everything set up properly, all new battery and alternator, but if there's scale built up on the cables that connect to the battery terminal, it will create high resistance and not allow the battery to charge properly, also create enough heat at the terminal it can damage the battery. Those must be clean enough to show shiny new metal.

Bad Alternator

In reply to: Nissan 1997

If the battery was weak while running , the alternator should keep it running.
The battery is for starting the engine but not to keep it running once started.
