I don't have that lens but most likely there is nothing wrong with it.
The film SLR lens you remember from a few years ago was likely a manual focus lens.
They can be slightly snug and your hand can easily turn the lens to focus.
An auto focus lens can not be snug because you have a small electric motor turning the lens.
A little slop is acceptable and should not hinder the focus.

Just bought the D3000 online. Upon playing with it, I noticed that the focus in the front wobbles back and forth slightly. I used to play with SLR cameras a couple years ago so I know it's not normal. Is there any way to repair the lens or am I looking at a new lens?
