Nikon D200 price difference!
May 17, 2006 2:49AM PDT

Hi snapshot2,
Your knowledge of the Camera market is undoubted, only beaten,if at all, by your knowledge of the photography.

I followed the web link you provided.

The price given in British Pounds is 1369.99. Then the price given as ''Street price'' in $s is 1699, in USA one assumes.

Using the conversion rate of GBP to USA $ at current rate of (generously interpreted) 1 pound to 1.80 $ the difference is staggering.

Why are the Brits getting a raw deal?
Can some one solve this seemingly absurd situation?

Using the exchange rate, it would appear that the D200 should be available in the UK for about 940 pounds.

But when I look for prices in the UK, I find the D200 selling for 1145 pounds (bottom price) to 1250 pounds.

Looking at countries in Europe, I find the price in pounds is just about the same in all European countries as it is in the UK.

.......

The only thing that makes sense is that the difference in price is reflective of taxes imposed by the UK.

The US price of $1,699 is the street price, but when you buy the camera, there is a state sales tax added.
This is usually somewhere around 8 to 9 percent.

That could make the camera cost the buyer as much as $1,852.
That would interpret to about 1025 pounds.

So my guess is..........the UK is imposing about 22 percent tax on the D200.

As of Sept 24th their still holding at that price!

Wanna bet what's gonna happen? Wait for a new 's' model much like the D70S to be released soon.! Then all of a sudden prices will drop on the plain D200. Most buyers will not be aware of this fact and spend all kids of money for discounted (and now obsolete) plain D200s.

Sadly, it just seems that's the way it's heading.

You can still 'save' money now though on all those discounted 'gray market' models that the internet is flooded with. It's fun to track the pricing on all those shown on the internet - some seem almost too good to be true!

But I think everyone selling the D200 at the MSRP smacks of price fixing, which the internet was supposed to stop somewhat by opening up the competition.

So much for that idea...
