For that type of photography, you need a camera with a bright lens and an ISO setting of 3200.
Something like the Canon 350D Rebel with a 50mm f1.8 lens (about $850).
There are a few small cameras that can perform better in low light than you Nikon S1. But you will still need to set the camera on a tripod or on a solid support, because the shutter speed will be slow.
Here is a sample shot from the Fujifilm F11 (not available in USA):

Settings were f2.8, ISO 800, shutter speed 1/10th of a second. The camera was setting on a table.
Note....at the end of the bar, the blur of a waiter that was walking when the shutter snapped.

i am trying to take pictures in low light with some movement (ex: bands performing on stage) and it seems as though no matter what scene-setiing i choose the picture comes out blurry. i have tried: regular no-flash, museum, sports, night landscape, night portrait, landscape, sunset, fireworks, etc etc.... the pictures always come out blurry! does anyone know what setting will take these pictures and have them come out clean with the colors/ lowlights still rich? i want to avoid using a normal flash because it takes the sort of ambience of the dimlit room away.. i want to retain the softness but get a crisp photo... without using a tripod!!!!!!
i'm open to suggestions...
