Nikon Coolpix 2100 is draining batteries

Apr 19, 2005 12:46AM PDT

Hi,

Last year I bought a Nikon Coolpix 2100 in Japan and since then I have had problems with the rechargeable batteries being drained and empty very quickly, usually they last about 10 to 15 pictures. So lately I decided that I would give it a try with normal i.e. non-rechargeable batteries and the problem still persists, after 10 pictures or so the batteries are empty again!!! I suppose it comes from the camera itself but is there a way to fix this problem?

Has anybody encountered the same type if issue with a Coolpix camera or another? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Tabehodai.

I have had this problem when I hold the shutter button half

way down for extended periods of time. Since it is actively focusing with the button in that position, it uses a lot of power. My Nikon 4500 gets warm to the touch if I'm doing it for extended periods. (I do it when I'm trying to get candid shots in low light, and I'm waiting for the subject to hold still.)

In normal shooting, I do not see excessive battery drain.

According to one review, you should get 1.5 hours or usage (with LCD turned on) when using 1800 - 2100mAh NiMH batteries.

Be aware that the time spent downloading the files from the camera to the computer is using battery power too.

I would suspect that you have a bad NiMH battery.
Been there....done that.

Buy a new set of NiMH batteries - get the largest mAh rated batteries you can find. WalMart has a large selection of NiMH batteries. You will find them near the computer/television section.

Since it is possible you could also have a defective charger unit, get a changer/batter kit. They have some now, that can charge a set of batteries in 15 minutes.

Draining Batteries

Nikon proposes one check the firmware version on their 2100 camera to ensure that it is V.1.1. If not, one can download the 1.1 version (which is supposed to cure the known problem of rapid re-chargeable battery draining) & install it. My 2100 already had that V1.1 from new but still drains batteries to the extent that even carrying 8 batteries (4 fully charged "sets"). I've posted a letter to Nikon as a registered user but so far had no reply. As far as I'm concerned & seeing (on the Net) the number of other users complaining of the same problem, the Nikon company don't seem to have found the real cause of this problem or they can't fix it. I don't know for sure, which is the true situation but for the present, my 2100 camera is a pain to use with such a problem & I think it's about time Nikon got to work on it to remedy what is clearly a "factory" fault in an otherwise good camera.

Me too

I have had this problem with every single digital camera I've owned. Not only do they drain batteries but after a short time they don't recognize new batteries. I've had this last one for about a month. I've taken about 20 pictures total and now it (once again) when I put in a brand new battery it still says "Batteries Exhausted." I've tried six batteries out of a new package and none of them work. I am about ready to scream. This is my second Nikon Coolpix in less than a year and my 6th digital camera in as many years. I'vee tried every brand and and price ranges from $50 to $250. They all fail.
What is the deal with this?
