Without flash....forget the kit lens.
Instead, get a 50mm f1.8 (no zoom) lens. (price $115)
You can use your feet for zooming.
A 50mm lens was the first lens I bought for my DSLR camera.
Great for low light and at a bargain price.
It is also a great portrait lens when used on the D40, D50, or D70.
I want to upgrade my Canon Power Shot G 2 to a Nikon Digital SLR. Not yet finalised whether to go for D40,D50 or D70s. My immediate requirement is to take photos of my months old grand daughter without using flash. Mostly indoor where the lighting may not be very satisfactory. It may not be possible to use a stand always.
Now my doubt is, if I chose D50, should I go for the kit lens which is the zoom 18mm--55mm, or should I get the Nikkor 50mm f /1.8 which I feel will be better in poor lighting conditions. Will the zoom lens at the maximum zoomed in position give a good picture as the aperture will be only f/5.6.
My budget does not allow me to go for both lenses right now.
