I have used both and I'm currently using Nextel. Sprint has a wider coverage area but does cost more. If you want a phone with picture capabilities Sprint probably has a better plan. If you are going to be in major metropolitian areas, you might want to look at NEXTEL. I was paying $37.00 a month with sprint for one phone and getting 300 anytime minutes (Sprint does have larger plans, but this plan met my needs). With NEXTEL I get 400 anytime minutes 500 direct connect minutes for 2 phones and the cost is under $55.00 (I do get a substantial discount because of my employer better than Sprint). All other things being equal (web service, 3 way calling, etc...) both have execellent plans and service. For me Nextel is a better plan I do travel a little and the coverage is in the areas that I travel to and the Push-to-talk option allows me to talk to some people instantly.

I would reccommend that you you consider where you travel to then think about how much air time you need. I know both companies have discounts for IBM employees but NEXTEL has discounts for Military as well. You will need to ask about the company that you work for. Everything else is equal.

You should see if you know anybody in that area. I have heard that Sprint has bad coverage in crowded areas, but have not experienced it myself and I live in a small town (24k). I had Sprint for awhile but cancelled because it was too expensive (not just Sprint, but any cell phone). Here is what I found:

-No dropped calls
-Awesome clarity
-Expensive
-HORRIBLE customer service (for the whole story, check the forum for "Sprint vs. T=mobile)
-Network is limited to major highways and interstates

However, if you travel along interstates, then you should be fine. Check the brochures at your local Radio Shack for coverage areas. Sprint is also a little bit more expensive than other carriers as is nextel. Nextel is nice if you like the 2 way radio thing, but overall, I get the opinion from the majority of people around me that the 2 way radio thing is annoying and intrudes on other people because they can hear your conversation. Hope this helps, at least a little.

I have both Sprint & Nextel and Sprint sucks more than Nextel both have problems in certain areas.
I was in the southern part of Puerto Rico and I had no problems with my sprint called everywhere and received calls BUT I LOSE calls from my home in a major city daily. So I have a nextel and in certain areas I lose calls also
Dont like sprint's attidude $5.00 to make a phone payment-bad attitude of the people when you need help etc
Amazing how far behind this country is compared to the rest of the world- I just got off a call from a associate who was calling from a tunnel in Switzland!!!
Sprint is OK- Nextel is slightly better the walkie talkie feature is fanstatic!! People have been great
Good Luck

Nextel vs Sprint
Mar 24, 2005 5:43PM PST

i used nextel before and i personally think there service was great when they first came out. Now there so so. I dislike Nextel due to the fact of alot of dropped calls and system busy when you try to make a call sometimes well most of the time. I had trouble with trying to get signal when im not near the city but in the city great signal. But you were asking which one's better well romur is that there merging wit each other.. So with all this other mobile to mobile free offered by other carriers i would not reconmend Nextel there taxes and fees are outragous too... Good Luck

Long time Nextel user

I am a longtime Nextel User. And I have been very happy. I have also worked in the Cell phone industry for 6 years. I have worked for different indirect dealers that have carried multiple carriers. So I have dealt with all of them from Cingular to Nextel. You are going to want to look at what the people you are going to be talking are using. If they are using Nextel I would suggest Nextel, same goes for Sprint PCS. This way you can save on your monthly bill by using Mobile to Mobile. Once you find out what the other people you will be talking to are using find out how they like there service. I also suggest talking to your neighbors and find out what they have and how well it works inside there home. Like I said I have had Nextel for years now and never dropped a call, never waited more then 2 minutes when I needed to call tech, or customers service to pay my bill

Sprint is great!
May 29, 2005 1:36PM PDT

Hi, if you are looking for more coverage definately go with Sprint. Since Sprint and Nextel are merging, within a few years it will all be the same service anyway but for now I would recommend Sprint. Like you I live in a big city where all cell phone services work great (South Florida) but I also travel a lot and for the year that I've had Sprint it's been great. I also pay extra for free roaming... so I really never loose service. I hardly ever get dropped calls and Sprints network is all digital so wherever you are on the Sprint nationwide network you can send text and picture messages and go online, watch tv, etc. That is one of the great things about Sprint- it's features. I have the Sanyo SCP-5500 (VM-4500) and it's been great! I've been thinking of upgrading my phone actually just because they have newer and better things out there now. Coming from T-Mobile, Sprint has definately satisfied my needs.
