Newspaper Website

Sep 8, 2008 5:31AM PDT

Hi! I was hoping that someone could help me out:
I am part of a High School Newspaper that comes out biweekly. Limitations on the staff and commitment prohibit us from coming out more frequently so we miss a lot of breaking news. I was hoping that there was a way for me to create a website that allows me to have it running at all times and allows the writers to upload the stories instead of a web admin to the page. I know ive seen it before. The problem is that I dont know HTML... so if anyone has anything like this already built, ill buy it for a reasonable price.

Search for a CMS (Content Management System). Joomla, for example, is free and widely used. There are others also. But probably, you'll need support from the IT dept to install it on the school's server and help you with configuring it. And that will cost them time, so you'll what's called "management commitment" (the school management team saying "That's a good idea!" and freeing some resources for the implementation).

There's a lot of blog software also. And what's a blog other than kind of a electronic paper?

And maybe, the school is planning to implement MOSS (Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server). That could be made to fit your requirements also.

If your school currently has educational software like Blackboard (widely used, but maybe not on high schools), that's kind of a CMS also. So you might be able to make a "Breaking news" section there, that's accessible to all concerned.

What all these options have in common: you don't need any knowledge of HTML!

Thank You

Thank you so much for the help! I looked at the Joomla and it seems like the perfect fit. So once i set up the website i can just give it to my web admin and ask her to host it for me? Is there any specific things that i could do to make it easier for her? I tried something in Dreamweaver, (but I have an ancient version and its a paint to use) and she said she would have no problem uploading it if it was a dreamweaver file... should Joomla work like that? and once its operational how can i get the writers to upload stories directly? or would I have to go in and place them?

Thank you again for all your help!

All I know about joomla ...

is that you can give other people a logon. Anyway, that's what the webmaster of our local chessclub did.

Why not contact your web admin to start with?

And http://forum.joomla.org/ is joomla's forum. I'm sure you can get help there for any question you have.

I used joomla and wordpress

And although Joomla is powerful, Wordpress is much easier to learn and its most powerful feature is customization. They also have some pre-made newspaper style templates, that are also free, like these:

http://cssace.com/?preview_theme=WP_Premium
http://rewind.themasterplan.in/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/home_preview_themorningafte.png

There are plenty more. You can test out Joomla and Wordpress here and find the one you'd like to work with:

Joomla http://opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2097&Itemid=1&catid=68

Wordpress http://opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2143&Itemid=1&catid=69

Note: Wordpress is listed as a blog, but it can be used for a CMS also - it's very easy to customize.
