NewSID disaster 500.000$ involved.

Jan 11, 2008 8:16PM PST

Hello,
Can you please help me, I have "lost" my data from pc after using NewSID. I tried to change sid and then after 40 min of display message "changing new sid" I restarted computer. After reboot I got an little surprise, All my files are gone, some programs loaded from programfiles. Then I saw that there are two users in the user folder, before, was only one called "mis" (no password) and now there is this second user"mis.mis-PC" from here I can access program files, documents (empty), desktop (empty) but I cannot use most of the operations that use "user account control" so I cannot access user "mis" because popup asks me to enter password to gain control, but there is no field to enter password and the "OK" button is grey (nonclickable). When I want to switch user there are: "mis" and "other user" icons. Same problems are found using any of them...
Can you please help I have data of my work form 6 months ago, ( I know backup , backup...) and losing of that data would be disastrous for my work 500.000$ value ( I know: backup , backup...), but please if you could help me with this, it?ll save my life. Thank you.

Newsid and Vista
Jan 11, 2008 10:42PM PST

For NEWSID to work, you have to run in elevated admin mode in Vista. Right click NEWSID and select Run Elevated. It works then. Now... others have had the hanging problem and I haven't seen a fix for it. For XP Home... if you could not access files on your computer, you boot into Safe mode and log in as Administrator and take ownership of the files.

Follow these instructions here to gain access to the files:

http://www.defectivekit.net/2007/03/gain-control-of-those-access-denied.html

Once you gain access, back up the files. Your installation is most likely in a unknown and I would think unstable state. Personally, I would back up the data and reinstall. Trying to fix a newsid that was incomplete would most likely lead to more headaches.

BTW... you only need to use NEWSID if you clone a system on a WORKGROUP network where the original computer still is in use. THe SID of both computers would be the same allowing access to files for users on both systems. If you are in a Active directory or domain environment, then there is no issue because the files are assigned a different SID from the Domain.

I hope this info is useful for you.

I would contact Mark Russinovich or Bryce Cogswell and pay them for their services to get it back.
