XP can't tell what a DVD drive is until.... You install software such as nero or others. And said versions in OEM form often result in such headaches. Try uninstalling that software and then delete the filters in the registry like you read at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
That should get the drives working unless you gaffed the jumpers. The lockups are common with incorrect jumpers or if you didn't install the motherboard drivers.
AND DVD PLAYBACK IS NOT INCLUDED IN XP! Your post didn't tell what DVD player software you installed.

I have just put together a PC consisting of Abit A-N68SV(MCP68S) motherboard, 2048 MB memory, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600 dual core processor, 250 GB Hitachi SATA hard disk, and Philips DVDR1660P1 RW DVD drive (IDE)
Installed windows XP professional, every thing works fine.
I have now added a second DVD Re-Writer, an SATA Optiarc DVD RW AD-7203S.
This is correctly identified in device manager, but not in windows explorer, where it shows as DVD-RAM drive if I have no disc in it, or as a CD drive if I put a CD in it. However, it wont play either CD's or DVD's, it either tells me to put a disc in the drive, or locks up the PC completely.
Where have I gone wrong, and how can I get this second drive to work?
