Newly Built Computer Freezing When Loading Programs Puzzling

Hi all,

So I decided to be super smart and build my own computer. Problem is, it ain't working so well. I have a very slow boot time, about 3 minutes. When I start a program, say Windows Media Player 11 the cpu goes through the roof and the mouse pointer becomes sporadic. I end up having to close the program through task manager. I've looked under the tasks menu while the cpu is at 100% but there isn't really anything else tying up the system (That's shown).
I'm really perplexed because I bought some nice stuff, installed it slowly and methodically, but have slow load times. Games work great, no problems there, mainly just when I start up/use certain programs like Windows Media Player.
The system if free of spyware etc, I've run system mechanic, spybot and AVG. Besides, I've only had it running a couple days and have a firewall running and haven't downloaded anything.

Here are my specs:

Pentium D 3.4ghz DUAL CORE 775 CPU | 800/4M
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R motherboard
Western Digital GP - 1TB
VGA Asus EN9600GT 512MB
6GB OCZ Platinum Memory
Creative Sound Blaster Platinum x-fi

If anyone has any idea I'd be very grateful. I tested the memory, everythings fine. Could it be the bios? Or maybe the WD GP hard drive?

Thanks,
Mark

Sounds like

Sounds like the infamous DMA bug. The sporadic mouse movement is the real giveaway.

I won't repeat what has been covered countless times before on these forums, but if you type in something like "DMA bug" into a search engine, you should come across a page or two detailing how to toggle this setting.

Thanks but...

Thanks for the tip, but the dma appears to be fine, also not sure if this matter, but my hd is sata. I also un-installed/re-installed the dvd drive. Neither seemed to do the trick. It's not just slow during start up of windows media player, but during the start up of any music program, creative/jukebox etc. Could it still be a DMA problem?

Thanks again,
Mark
