newbie trying to decide on graphics card

by Stryder13 / February 5, 2006 8:58 AM PST

As part of my search for a new laptop, as I am a soon to be college bound student, I want a machine that can play DVD's, watch TV and play games. Aside from the obvious nature of this statement, I am more than lost when it comes to graphics cards. I have read glorious things about the new ATI All-In-Wonder X1900 as well as the Nvidia's 7800GTX. But, for a college student, these are pretty expensive. What I want is a card that can handle games such as Splinter 3, Halo, Far Cry, etc. without the hinderance of visible lags and blacked-out pixles (does this make any sense? Sorry, I'm not sure how to explain this....) Basically, do I really need a $500 card to play these games? Is there a more reasonable card that will let me play games such as the ones mentioned above, as well as games on the near horizon?

Thank you in advance!

about the laptop...

I should probably add that I have not purchased the laptop yet, as the graphics card will play a deciding role in my purchase.

that laptop which, by the way, is good, maybe look for a laptop that would have MXM.Also, your changes didn't make it through the link.

Here is a link explaining what it is

http://www.nvidia.com/page/mxm.html

I'm not sure whether that laptop has it, though it does mention that it runs on PCI-e 16x...It doesn't directly tell you that it runs on MXM.

there r cheaper cards
by Brewstertherooster / March 1, 2006 8:58 PM PST

im no pro but im lukin for a cheaper card too so wat i found was that u can get a gud graphic card for about 300$ .

try the site shopping.com.

1 major thing that u gotta keep in mind is wether u have a agp slot or a pci-e on ur motherboard.

pci-e is the new technology so offcourse costlier cards its better too.
