Newbie{sorta} needs help!

Nov 18, 2004 7:28AM PST

I'm trying to buy a digital camera & got so confused..someone suggested for me to come here..Wow!I can't believe I've missed this place. It looks great for me to learn all kinds of "stuff". Ok back to my problem..I don't have much money to spend {$150 or less} need a digital camera that's easy to use. These are the ones that I've chosen so far. Vivitar vivicam 3715 & 3705 and also Kodak CX7300 Any thoughts on them?? Or if someone wants to suggest a camera for me ..that's great too. Thanks

The 3 cameras you listed provide almost identical specifications.

I don't know of any professional reviewers that reviews Vivitar cameras. Therefore it is difficult to get comparison data.

However Vivitar did have a group of photos from the 3715 on their website. No photos for the 3705, but I suspect they will be identical to the 3715.

I also checked the Kodak CX7300 photos included in this review:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/cx7300.html

The Kodak produces a much sharper photo.
The Vivitar photos were "soft".

Based on the CX7300 review and the sample photos, I would select the Kodak camera.

All three cameras use Alkaline batteries which means you will want to get a set of NiMH rechargable batteries (with a charger). You can find these for as low as $10 at Walmart. It will save you money in the long run and the NiMH batteries hold a charge much longer that an alkaline battery.

Are you going to buy this digital camera fairly soon? If so can you tell me your thoughts and experience with it when you buy it. I am contemplating and really leaning to it since I am a beginner but b.c people are saying kodak is not that great, I am a little disappointed. Let me know.

I have another question. Someone suggested that I get a DX4900 dock to go along with my Kodak CX7300..
Would I really need one of those?..it sounds expensive..
Snapshot2 suggested NIMH batteries & charger..when I go to Walmart..what am I looking for?? Gosh, that sounds so stupid..is there a particular model or what? Maybe I'd better take the {sorta} out of the newbie title. Thanks for any help. dw

The Dock is not required, it just makes it convienient to connect to your computer.
And yes, it is expensive ($60).

NiMH batteries/charger - WalMart sells several brands of NiMH batteries (with charger). I remember seeing one set made by Digital Concepts right next to the digital cameras. That one sells for about $20. I have also purchased other brands for $10.

Go to the camera department and tell the person at the counter that you want to see some NiMH AA batteries with a charger. They come packaged in a blister pack, containing 4 batteries and a charger.

Shopping for docking..
Nov 19, 2004 10:33PM PST

I found a Kodak dock refurb (by Kodak) for 19.99 at compgeeks. Called dad and he snapped one up. It looks new and had the full retail box and a Kodak "Refurb" seal on it.

So if you shop around, it won't cost too much.

Thanks for all the info. I did find the charger at Walmart. Maybe as I get more experienced with the digital camera I can look into the docking stuff. Thanks so much for all your help. dw
