I went for the DCR-HC36, but I didn't have $1K to play with. I have been extremely satisfied with mine. The DCR-HC96 is in your range. I checked pricegrabber and bought from Digital Photo. Prices change regularly, so check with pricegrabber before buying.

I am looking for a mini DV camcorder that will shoot well in low-light, have good sound, 10X or more optical zoom, possibly 3CCD's. I will primarily be using it for shooting dance recitals in auditoriums, outdoor sporting events like soccer games and special events for my kids. I have heard that Sony, Panasonic and Canon are good but I am not exactly sure which would be the best. If anyone could help me that would be great. Oh, and I am looking in the price range of up to $1000 US dollars. Thanks!
