Newbie + Modem = :-(

Nov 3, 2005 9:43AM PST

I have recently installed Win 98 in a computer that was running 2000
and am having any amount of trouble with the modem.
The modem worked perfectly well under 2000 on com4.
The win was listed in 2000 as LT Winmodem,
it has a Lucent 1646Too chip.

The trouble is that 98 insists that the thing is on Com5

Device manager claims that it is installed and that it is working.
However if you ask not Device manager but the Modem
part of control panel to test the modem it
comes up 'Cannot open port"
It also gives the error "No ID for this hardware"

I have installed the driver Lucent 1646_ALL_WIN
and Device manager seems to find and checks it out
OK.

I absolutely cannot get 98 to allow change of port and
System information doesn't even list it.
Mind you , it doesn't find Com4 either which I know
the modem ran on, on the same setup under 2000.
I have reinstalled 98 several times and tried installing
new hardware etc and every other thing my meger
knowledge allows.

I wouldn't be giving myself all this pain except I need
98 or earlier to run some specific app's.

Can any one help me with this evil box of wire ?

I take it this is a modem card, right. If so, then check your system for any other "serial devices" if none, then your serial port from the mtrbd. are active. At least disable under the bios, COM2 for now. If no COM2, then COM1. That way all mtrbd. serial portsa are now disabled. The system will only see the card modem and directly select it as COM1 or COM2, maybe COM3. If it gets recongized, OK, if not, then get the "proper modem card driver". The latest should be best to cover all bases. Recheck, etc. and test again. If it still fails, swap to another pc slot and retry install again. It should see it as new h/w upon boot-up.

Comm ports above 2 are virtual ports, not physical. But you might try moving the modem to another PCI slot.

Uninstall the modem, on reboot enter the BIOS.

Look for the serial ports ->

Set one of the ports to IO value of 3E8, this is comm 3 -> save settings -> reboot to windows and reinstall the modem.

Auto settings in BIOS for Comm Ports and the card being PnP these steps should not be necessary, but on older systems it is.

For entering the BIOS it is generall the DEL or F1 key.
F10 for older HPs and Compaqs, F2 for Dell and Sony. Watch the screen for correct key combinations or hold down the Insert key when turning on the system, this will, or should, stop the boot sequence. You will be given two options ''Press F# to enter set-up'' - ''Press F# to continue".

From this point I cannot help. Each BIOS is the same and different. At the bottom of the window is a list of commands yo will have to follow.
