Newbie here, Just bought the Pentax K10D Kit w/ the 18-55mm

May 17, 2007 1:45AM PDT

I am very new to the SLR family. Just upgraded from a point and shoot. I bought my pentax w/ a lens kit included and just started using it.

What size SD card should I purchase?
What are the next two lenses should I have?

I'm a mom and plan to take lots of family and nature shots with an interest in taking a photography class in the fall.

And anything else a newbie should know will be appreciated. Oh and by the way how do I take B&Ws with this camera?

Thanks so very much

Pentax K10D

Memory card:
The K10D can use all SD memory cards up-to and including the 2 gig cards.
It can also handle SDHC cards (4 gig and higher).

I would start with either 1 gig or 2 gig

For best continuous performance, buy a high speed card.
SanDisk high speed cards are called Ultra II and Extreme II/III.
With the high speed memory cards your camera can take continuous photos at 3 shots per second, until the card is full.

How is that for capturing a boy sliding into home plate?

............

It is too early to be looking for more lenses.
Use your camera for about 6 months, and you will know what lenses you want.

.............

By all means take the photography class.
You will learn a lot about the features on your camera and photography in general.

.............

B&W

Pentax uses something called Digital Filters to
convert a photo to B&W, Sepia, and all types of color tints.
Start reading on page 95 of the operating manual.

Operating Manual

The manual has a full index, starting on page 228.

Thanks so much.

I'm looking forward to those photog classes. And I will wait before buying any additional lenses since I don't have any idea what to buy.

And I guess I'll go peruse that manual again.

K-10D Lenses

Hi,

I bought a K10D a few months ago, and also have the 18-55 kit lens. I want to shoot wildlife and scenic photos, as well as family photos.

The 18mm end of the kit lens equates to about 27mm, which is pretty wide for scenic shots, so you would already have that covered.

The telephoto end, 55mm, equates to about 83mm, which could be used for portraits, but it's a little too short for a perfect portrait lens, which would be around 105mm. A portrait lens lets you stand a short distance away from the subject, while still getting a good head and shoulders portrait without standing too close and making the nose look too large.

For wildlife, you will need an (expensive) telephoto lens. I just bought a Sigma (good third party lens manufacturer) 170mm - 500mm lens, which on the K10D is a 255mm - 750mm super zoom. It was over $700, so if you want to get into this kind of photography, start saving.

Photography classes will certainly help you develop some skills that will last a lifetime.

Good luck!
