Newbie: Flash Memory Storage Question

I have just purchased my first MP3 player(Samsung YP-T9). The documentation is adequate, but it doesn't deal with how the player stores files. If I remove music from the player, does the device realocate space to remaining files, or does it work more like a computer disk drive. I read the Forum's Sticky warning to not Format the player. Are their maintenace functions that I should do to maximize space usage and perfrormance?
