Newbie but not totally stupid :0)

Looking for a new camcorder to take to the beach (old one is trashed). I am mainly concerned about great video quality after editing (w/out any hassle) so I'm going w/the same format: miniDV. I looked at other threads but I'm still not sure about the 3CCD - optical zoom trade-off :-\ I shoot family stuff (football, surfing, swimming, etc.) so I want a decent zoom (25+) but should I compromise and go with 3CCD w/10X zoom for better video quality?

Since we don't know your budget...

Panasonic's PV-GS320 is 3CCD @ 10x optical zoom.

Canon ZR family members are single CCD @ up to 48x zoom.

Sony DCR-HC52 does 40x optical zoom and HC62 does 25x optical zoom - and both are single CCD...

I see your dilemma...

Um... would a lens kit on the GS320 be of interest?
It won't get you to 25x+, but the 2x tele gets you to 10x2... One of the reviews refers to a 3x tele... Be careful with these, though - I get some vignetting (corners get rounded off) when I use a 2x tele on my Sony.

RE: Budget & Video Quality

In reply to: Since we don't know your budget...

Thanks for your reply! Here's the thing: if the video quality with 3CCD is far superior, I'll just deal w/the 10X optical zoom. However, it it's better but not dramatic, I'd rather go with single CCD @ 48 optical. I guess I need to know: how much better is 3CCD than single? Once I have the answer, I'm all set :0)
