Newbie building a 1k rig. Need help please

May 8, 2014 6:02AM PDT

Thank you very much for taking the time to look at this. I have been a console gamer for over 15 years but I love the mmo crowd and diversity of a PC. I am a quick learner and have been reading build guides online for weeks with quite a few questions AND a setup!

First, the setup (not bought yet)

CPU: Intel Core i5-4430 3.0GHz Quad-Core
Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty H87 Performance LGA 1150 Intel H87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Gaming Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card
Case: NZXT Phantom 410 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 620W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24F1ST DVD/CD
Monitor: ASUS 24" 144hz HDMI widescreen w/backlight
Windows 7 home premium 64 bit

So my main question is will this be an effective build, especially for a beginner. If not what would you do differently, keeping in mind I want to stick around 1k. Thanks so much!

You just duplicated the usual 1K Haswell build.

Wow. Did not know

Thanks for the point out. I found a build similar to this on a forum and made some mods to it. Didn't know he had a guide but I'll read it. I'm sure it will help. Thanks!

I just chose windows 7 because I haven't played with 8 too much but I do own a xbox one so if you don't think it's a downgrade I'll move onto 8. A newb question for your pro tips. Are there versions for 8, like 7 depending on your computer and if so what would be the best windows 8 version (I think there is only core version, but I could be wrong)

The take away from that article for me

Was the reminder we don't have to over invest in the case. I'm sure that over time you might be able to duplicate their build but with your step up in the video card.

As to 8, the office banned it, then we found Classic Shell and then accepted it. Can't see much wrong after that. Things move around but it is well supported by current hardware makers and frankly? I think it's faster overall than 7.
