Newbie Advice Needed

Apr 6, 2007 10:05PM PDT

I have a new wireless laptop with Windows
Vista Home Premium. What kinds of anti-virus, etc. programs do I need to install? My 30 day McAfee free trial is up, and from what I've read I don't want to pay for it. So far, I have AVG, Spware Terminator and CCleaner. Am I missing something? Thanks.

In the V&S forum is a sticky post with many choices,LINK

You say you have avg,is this the avg anti visus and/or avg anti spyware?

You could try ROGUE REMOVER,AD-AWARE and SPYWARE BLASTER which is a preventer.

I don't know if vista comes with a firewall.

Vista security...

1.) Antivirus. The free version of AVG is good enough that you don't need to purchase a subscription to McAfee or another.

2.) Antispyware. Vista comes with Windows Defender, but it has a few flaws/omissions in its full system scan. Thus, if you prefer a free route, keep it running for real-time protection and then add AVG Antispyware (previously known as Ewido) for the weekly scans.

3.) Firewall. Vista comes with a two-way firewall built-in, something XP lacked. For ow you can leave it at that, but ZoneAlarm is currently beta testing a new Vista-compatible version, which I would suggest installing when it's released. If you'd rather not wait, PC Tools Firewall is a comparable alternative.

As far as Spyware Terminator goes, it used to be listed as a rogue application, with the company having ulterior motives behind its release. It has now been 'cleared,' but it is a reputation that's hard to completely live down. You could stick with it, but I prefer the combination of Defender and Ewido.

Hope this helps,
John
