If this link doesn't open for you without a password, go to New York Times.com, register, and click on ''Technology''. The three page article is entitled ''In Sony's stumble, The ghost of Betamax''. If required, registration is harmless. It's a wonderful news source that updates hourly, and I get no junk mail whatsoever. Hope you enjoy. Happy Bob

MORE ON BLUE RAY
Feb 25, 2006 11:33AM PST

I just completed my home theater system and spent tons of money, My Denon 2910 d.v.d. player does an excelent job of upconverting the picture and The d.v.d. picture quality is great. I would be the first in line to upgrade to hi-def d.v.d. only when I can rent and buy movies at the vidio stores also I have over 100 standard d.v.d. movies and would not spend the money to replace movies I already own

If I had his super system, I guess I'd be hard pressed not to brag also. I wish I too had his ''Beer Budget''!!! Just ''breakin' some'', Stewart. I love your posts, even though sometimes I question whether you type with your toes! P.S. I have an extremely dry sense of humor. Happy Happy Your friend, Bob

Does anyone really think HD-DVD has a chance??
Feb 26, 2006 5:00PM PST

I read the entire article, and feel the same as before. HD-DVD is an improvement, and blu-ray is the future. It is superior in every way.
However because of the new HDMI "laws" the movie studios are putting on both formats. I might just boycott. I have a great HDTV with 2 HDMI hookups. But for the early adopters(first 3 years of HDTV) they will either get no picture or a degraded ver. of the film, which would of course defeat the purpose of HD-anything. I just dont like someone making my AV decisions for me. If you guys want more in depth I'll give you the link to this blistering article

Does anyone really think HD-DVD has a chance??

Yes, No, maybe, probably! How that for beating around the bush???
As I have said before, I'm sitting this war out!!!
I was in the thick of it on the VHS/Beta Max, and the laser disk wars.
Sony seems to have BIG corprate ego, this was their undoning in the betamax wars. I remember them well,,
Sony keep touting how much better Beta was than VHS, I started calling it the beta bull. They made a big deal of small differences. Beta had picture scan first, Sony spent BIG$$$$ promting this, said the VHS COULD NOT DO THIS!!!!!!! Six months later VHS had picturescan,,oops SONY so much creditablity.

Like the way they are calling the LCoS 1080p sets "TRUE HD" To put down any sets that aren't 1080p. 1080i is just as TRUE as 1080p!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sony claimed better picture quality! At the beta 1 speed this was very true, but at the beta 2 and 3 speeds not so true. Most Americans in the early '80 had Amarican made vacume tube TVs and the picture quality was not very good, so they could not tell the difference between a beta or VHS in picture quality!!
Today only a small % have HDTVs of any kind and ONLY HDTV will be able to show the full quality of a HD-DVD.
So wright know they are fighting over a very small market. 3 years from now it will be much bigger, so fight it out now when the casulities will be small. John

P.S. more info!!!!

There was post about the HD-DVD and image quality, I haven't had the time to find it. But to sum it up!!!

The ONLY WAY you will the full qualty of the HD-DVD is with HDMI!!!!! DVI, component you will get a reduced picture quality, not even up to 720p in quality, but only a little better than 480p. They will control you!!!!!!!
Do it thier way or else!!!
The media people( moive studios, etc) realy hate us consumers, remember the MMPA suit aganst SONY for inventing the VCR??? The VCR was BIG$$$$ boon for the movie studios. Selling movies after the theater run and making even more money on the films!!!!! But try to kill the VCR they did. John
