Why? Some machines have a white list of acceptable cards. You can research that issue as it's all over the web. Frankly this is why I carry some USB small WiFi dongle for such issues.

I need a new wireless card for an Asus K54C laptop. Their support told me I could use a 802.11B/G/N 1*1 WLAN HMC wifi card. Is that pretty much a generic description, or will I need to find something very specific to that model Asus?
