New window on screen

Aug 16, 2007 12:53AM PDT

Probably very stupid question but when I click on an icon the new window always comes up top left of the screen....can I change this placement?
The new window always used to come up in the middle of the screen but I must have clicked on something by accident....

The reason I want to change this placement is that the first dropdown menu in the menu-bar at the top of the screen left-hand side is now obscured by the new window and is displayed so I have to click to get rid of this before I can do anything else....it's very annoying.....

Many thanks,

Try this

If a simple drag to the center of the screen doesn't cure it for when you next open the window, try this.

Open the window and drag to the center of the screen. Then maximise the window, (top right hand corner of the window, the middle of the three boxes).

Now click the same middle button to reduce the window to the size it was before. Then goto File > Exit, (or Close).

The next time you open the window does it remember where you last closed it?

Hi Mark,
Works OK for the particular screen which has been dragged to centre, maximised and minimised...it returns to centre.
But a new window goes back to top left...Sad((

One of our other Moderators, Toni Hackler, has often suggested this and it seems to work for many. One of her posts is here;

but you may have to modify it, depending which Window/application you are talking about, (or is it every application you open?).

Try it on IE, (Internet Explorer), first, and if that doesn't work, try it on others. If you don't have an IE icon in the shortcut bar on the Taskbar, (near the Start button), like she says, just open IE from the Desktop icon, maximise it, then carry on with her instructions.

With other applications, change the Properties, then open and maximise the icon, then minimise to the Taskbar and see if you can open another instance of the same application. Then re-size that window and move it, then close the first instance then close the one you have just re-sized.

Trying different combinations of this may work for you.

Any specific program or all programs?
Where's the icon located?
Same when you start the program from Start>Programs?
