Dear Kitcar,

In my oppinion, the website would look alot better with a normal background, something very simple and not scroll-free. You could also make the background of the buttons a color other than black.

It's only my oppinion, and I don't mean any offense. Right now it looks like a 1998 website.

Sorry.

Hey guys, Thanks for the input!

I remember in days before good search engines (heck, BEFORE google even existed!) the best way to get traffic to your site was to exchange links with others. Now, 10 years later, one of the best ways to get noticed by the search engines is to exchange links with others.

The web is having nostalgia! So a background is not such a bad thing, just a yearnig for the days of old when men were men and women didn't understand the internet.

Technically speaking, every web site should have a white background and black text. All you need is information - that's what the internet and the web are all about. All the rest of the yehaw like background and such are entertainment and an artistic output by the designer.

Looks great to me.

I agree with the other comment that backgrounds can be an issue, but personally I like it.

The only (small) problem I had was the counter took a while to load, (all of 5 seconds, Happy ), but other than that it looks good.

Mark

Do you want to attract visitors?
Feb 24, 2005 11:21PM PST

OUCH! on that busy, busy background!!!!
If you just want to put up a site of things that interest you, and you don't care about getting visitors, no problem. However, if you wish to get a decent search engine ranking and attract visitors, several things come to mind. (1) What is your site about? Is it useful information about computer/internet resources, or is it about airplanes, or about cars? One website should be one topic, or you will confuse your visitors, not to mention that it's unprofessional. (2) Light text on a dark background cannot be seen by many. It also will not print out very well, since most people use white paper in their printer. (3) Animations are amateurish and should never be used unless they serve some real purpose. They're just distracting and annoying. (4) The page is just WAY too busy! I would get rid of that distracting background first, then making it much smaller by not putting ALL website links on one page. Better to list only the sections (since you have so many), and let the viewers go to just the sections they are interested in. (5) Net Mechanic results: Loading time: 86.78 seconds (should not be more than 5-10); 24 HTML errors; 17 browser compatibility problems. Suggest you check everything in Net Mechanic, then fix the problems before you unveil it to the public.

RE: attracting visitors

What a busy reply. My site is a demonstration of technologies. I use technology to scan photos, write my articles and show others how to host their web site from their home or SOHO computer. I would prefer that people not print my copyrighted material out but thanks anyway for the offer. My links will stay in the shared border because if there's one thing I hate it's searching around for a links page on a website where some idiot put their links on a totally separate page so you can't find them. And the comment about the background doesn't apply since I change parts of the formatting almost daily.

Now as far as hits/visitors goes, I'm averaging 300 from google, 125 from yahoo and 200 or so from other search engines and links on a daily basis; that's about all I want. Average visit length is 20 minutes or longer. Average pageloads per visit is 17. Maybe they're hypnotized by the animation. Happy

Don't Piggyback...

Start your own topic, don't piggyback on someone else's topic if your question has nothing to do with the original topic at hand.

Because I made it as a bitmap. If I were to convert it to a jpg or a gif, there would be a lossy effect in the graphic, which I tried to avoid and 144k doesn't seem that big. Eventually I'll **** around with.

My 2
Apr 2, 2005 9:28PM PST

Actually, I respect that each of us likes things a bit different.

My only feeling is that I prefer to not have long scrolls on pages I view. It makes navigating more tedious. If you have lots of links, you may wish to see my solution by using columns on my personal page...

www.prodesma.com/d.html

That can replace the two side columns on your site.

Also, I would love your "welcome" introduction to explain what your site is for. Like, "thanks for visiting my site on..." or "this page is created as a forum for things I enjoy"... It would help ground all the links in a more understandable way.

Cheers.
