New WD 250 gB internal HD only shows 137 gB capacity

Aug 23, 2007 6:12AM PDT

I just installed a new WD 250 gB hard drive in my Gateway 820GM computer as a slave secondary HD to store my photos, MP3's etc. I'm running XP Home Edition with SP2. The computer shows only 137 gB for this new HD. How do I get the computer to show the full 250 gB capacity of the new HD? Please keep any replies simple, as I'm not familiar with how to check the bios or other complicated procedures.

- What does disk manager say of this drive (total space, unallocated space)?
- Does it happen to be formatted FAT32? Then delete the partition and make a new one, being sure it's formatted NTFS.

New 250 GB WD hard drive only shows 137 GB

Disk manager shows 127 GB of free space and is formated for NTFS! How do I go about partitioning it? Remember, I'm not real computer savy.

Did you initially partition and format the drive yourself?

If so, it should be easy enough to delete the partition and start over. If you've put files on the drive already, you could just create a folder on the primary drive and copy everything there. From the disk management tool you can just delete and recreate the partition. A right click should bring up the needed options. Make sure when you recreate the partition that you select the maximum size of the drive. If it won't let you select a size above 127 GB we'll need to figure out why. Checking your model's specs shows it coming with 250 GB drive already (unless you know otherwise) so BIOS should not be a problem.

No, I just followed the installation instructions and connected the cables and it worked, but at 137GB not 250GB. I am lost from there. I did not format the drive and now, I have saved data on it. How do I set up new partitions and would you recommend I set up two partitions of 125GB each once I fi8gure out where the disk manager is at? I just want to backup my C drive so I don't lose all my documents and MP3's. Thanks so much for your help....sorry I'm such a novice.

Lets look at some things and do some math

Did the disk come with an installation utility disk and, if so, did you use that to set up the drive? What's the capacity of your primary drive and how much free space is left? How much space is occupied on the secondary drive? If there is plenty of free space remaining on the primary drive to accommodate what's on the secondary, you can create a folder there and just copy it all over. Just call the folder something like "Drive_2". Then, go to that drive and do a copy/paste of all files to the folder you just created. Once that's done, you can go to the disk management tool and delete the partition on the secondary drive and then try to recreate it using it's full size. When that's completed you can just do another copy and paste of the contents of the Drive_2 folder onto the physical second drive. You will, first, want to check the second drive with the disk management tool in XP to see if it shows unpartitioned space on that second drive. If not, there's a problem to be looked into. It's possible the BIOS didn't recognize the full capacity. There's stuff referring to LBA capabilities I don't get into here. If you did use a drive utility disk, it's possible you'll have to undo what you first did with that disk.
